JHL member, see the instructions for getting the strike benefit

8.4.2025

Trade Union JHL’s signs being carried in the Stop Now! demonstration. Serious Grounds.

Your trade union JHL can pay you a strike benefit after you have participated in a strike. You can apply for the benefit after the strike. In order to be eligible for the strike benefit, you must have become a member before the strike started, and your membership fees must be paid.

Are you involved in a strike? Your employer does not pay you salary or wages when you are on strike, and therefore your trade union JHL will pay you a strike benefit when certain conditions are met.

The amount of the strike benefit varies. For example, in the strike of the private social services sector early in the year 2026 the amount is €140 per day before taxes. Tax is deducted from the benefit in accordance with the Finnish Tax Administration’s instructions.

You can apply for the strike benefit through our member service myJHL. Read more detailed instructions on applying for the benefit.

Did you become a member right before a strike? You will get the strike benefit!

You can get the strike benefit as long as you have joined JHL before the strike started. This means that you can participate in a strike and receive the strike benefit, even if we have not yet processed your application before the start of the strike. It is enough that you have joined before the start of the strike, even on the day before it.

Join JHL!

JHL is the most diverse trade union in Finland. Our members work in about one thousand different occupations in welfare and public services. You can be for example a social welfare or health care professional, a youth worker or an early childhood education and care professional, a cleaner, a cook, a secretary, a security guard or a train conductor, and we are your trade union!

Who receives a strike benefit?

The benefit is paid to members who have participated in a strike.

We can pay you the benefit when these conditions are met:

  • You have joined the union before the strike started.
  • You have paid at least your first membership fee before the benefit is paid.
  • Members who have joined earlier also need to have paid their membership fees.
  • You act in accordance with JHL’s decisions and instructions.

Often many people want to join the union around strikes, and the high volume of applications can cause delays in their processing. If you are a new member and you do not see the benefit application on myJHL, you can contact your branch or regional office. You can check your branch on myJHL.

When do I apply for JHL’s strike benefit, and how quickly will it be paid?

When a strike is over, you need to apply for the benefit within two (2) months. We process benefit applications on a rolling basis, and benefits are paid as soon as possible.

Visit our strike page for more information about strike benefits and payments.
