Meet JHL actives at your workplace – we have launched a year-round workplace visit initiative
Did you know that many things in working life that people take for granted are results of trade unions’ persistent work? Trade Union JHL’s actives have started to visit workplaces more frequently to have discussions with the employees and to make sure that everyone gets heard.
Trade Union JHL’s actives will be seen at workplaces more often. Our actives have started visiting different workplaces throughout the year. The visits are usually organised on the last Wednesday of each month, but they don’t have to be on any specific day of the week.
The objective of the visits is to increase JHL’s visibility at workplaces. These visits support representation of interests, organisation and especially membership development, says JHL’s Union Activities Specialist Oskari Ollikainen who has been working on the initiative.
“Without members, the union loses its power to negotiate. These visits provide a natural opportunity to offer the union membership to non-members.”
When JHL actives visit workplaces, they listen closely what the employees have to say. Employees might not really know what the trade union does or why it exists. An individual member may have a rather distant relationship with the union.
Therefore, it is important to talk about the things that JHL and its actives have achieved and the security that the union provides in working life.
Better terms and conditions of employment with the union
Achievements of trade unions include for example eight-hour working day, five-day working week, summer and winter holidays, family leaves, earnings-related unemployment security and consolidating the position of shop stewards.
These and many other rights that we take for granted are results of trade unions’ work. Without trade unions we might have much longer working weeks with no holidays or overtime pay.
Our core mission is to defend and improve your terms and conditions of employment. We negotiate with the employers about your collective agreement. The collective agreement determines for example how much you get paid.
Trade unions exist because an individual employee is often in a weaker negotiating position than the employer. With the power of a trade union at their side, employees can achieve better terms and conditions of employment.
