Easter break in collective agreement negotiations for the private teaching sector and vocational adult education centres

No solution was reached in the collective agreement negotiations this week.

Collective agreement negotiations for the private teaching sector and vocational adult education centres started on 1 March. The negotiations continued every week and on several days until 27 March. Now the negotiations have paused for Easter holidays. After Easter the contracting parties JHL, Jyty, OAJ and Finnish Education Employers (FEE) will resume the negotiations on 3 April 2024.

The current collective agreements will expire on 31 March, and this means that a period without agreement will start on 1 April.

What is a period without agreement?

When the agreement period of a collective agreement comes to an end and a period without agreement starts, the provisions of the old agreement apply as usual until a new agreement has been concluded. Employees go to work as normal.

However, when work is done during a period without agreement, the obligation to maintain industrial peace no longer applies. If new agreements are not concluded and the period without agreement gets prolonged, industrial actions are very likely. The most common industrial actions of employees are a ban on overtime and shift swaps, and a strike. As for employers, one example of industrial actions is a lockout. It prevents employees from entering their workplace.

JHL, Jyty and OAJ represent the employees, and Finnish Education Employers (FEE) represents the employers in the negotiations.
