A trade union is your protector in the world of work – it offers much more than an unemployment fund

When you are a member of JHL, you get support for example from of a shop steward, who will help you with problems at work. JHL’s most important mission is to defend proper terms and conditions of employment, which we do together with our members.

When you are a member of Trade Union JHL, you are part of a large group of people who defend the interests of employees. Your trade union negotiates collective agreements that secure your rights as a worker.

It’s thanks to collective agreements that we have for example holiday bonuses, evening, night and shift work bonuses and paid leave if a child gets ill.

The table below shows how many benefits you get as a trade union member.

A table showing that trade union membership offers all this: Established by employees to develop and improve terms and conditions of employment; power in numbers to improve collective agreements and working life; negotiating pay increases in collective agreement negotiations; negotiating better terms and conditions of employment in collective agreement negotiations; help and support from a trained shop steward in conflicts of working life; legal support in conflicts of working life, without a payout limit of legal expenses insurances; support, help and strike benefit in industrial action; influencing legislation that affects working life in Finland and at the EU level; regional offices and their personnel near members; and earnings-related unemployment benefit.

You get the support of a shop steward at your workplace. The shop steward will help for example if the employer does not follow the terms and conditions of the collective agreement.

If a disagreement cannot be resolved, the shop steward can get help from JHL’s regional office.

Our members can also get free legal aid that has no upper limit. This membership benefit can be worth thousands of euros, or possibly even more.

JHL has successfully represented its members in many cases, and employees have been paid huge compensations.

Your trade union supports you when you participate in a strike

Trade unions are organisations that have been established by employees, and their power is founded on their large number of members. Together we can negotiate better terms and conditions of employment than alone.

If collective agreements are not reached at the negotiation table, the union can boost the negotiations with a strike.

If you participate in a strike, we will support you financially. The amount of the strike benefit varies, but for example in the strikes of the recent years it has often been €100 per day before taxes.

Members get income security for unemployment

If you become unemployed, you can apply for earnings-related daily allowance when you are also a member of the JHL Unemployment Fund. The earnings-related daily allowance is significantly higher than Kela’s basic unemployment allowance.

The JHL Unemployment Fund is the unemployment fund for welfare professionals. You can join the fund when you earn salary or wages.

JHL is the most diverse trade union in Finland. Our members work in about one thousand different occupations in welfare and public services. You can be for example a social welfare or health care professional, a youth worker or an early childhood education and care professional, a cleaner, a cook, a secretary, a security guard or a train conductor, and we are your trade union!
