Your shop steward is on your side and helps when you need support at your workplace

16.12.2025

Shop stewards are the people who take care that things at your workplace are done according to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement. Your shop steward is the first person you can turn to if you have problems at work.

Shop stewards represent JHL members at their workplace. They support and protect the employees they represent. If the employees encounter problems at the workplace, they can turn to the shop steward. Employees contact the shop steward if something in their job seems wrong or unclear and they have questions.

A shop steward supports and negotiates

A shop steward functions as a link between the employees and the employer. The shop steward also negotiates with the employer on many matters that concern terms and conditions of employment and working conditions

In private sectors shop stewards make local agreements with the employer. In public sectors they participate in negotiations as representatives of their branches or Trade Union JHL.

JHL helps and educates shop stewards

Trade Union JHL supports and advises shop stewards so that they can carry out the duties of their role in the best possible way.

If shop stewards need help to resolve more complicated matters, they can contact the union.

JHL is a large, strong, multisectoral trade union. JHL has trained shop stewards to private companies, municipalities, the central government, the church sector and wellbeing services counties.

When you are a member of JHL, you get the help of our extensive shop steward network that reaches all over Finland. Remember that a shop steward only handles matters of those employees who are union members.

Join JHL!

JHL is the most diverse trade union in Finland. Our members work in about one thousand different occupations in welfare and public services. You can be for example a social welfare or health care professional, a youth worker or an early childhood education and care professional, a cleaner, a cook, a secretary, a security guard or a train conductor, and we are your trade union!
