If you become unemployed
Are you becoming unemployed or being laid off?
Register as an unemployed job seeker at the local Employment and Economic Development Office (TE Office) as soon as possible or on the first date of your unemployment or layoff period.
Fill an application for earnings-related unemployment allowance, sign it, make sure to attach all necessary documents, and send it to the Public and Welfare Sectors’ Unemployment Fund. Basic Unemployment Allowance provided by Kela
Members are exempted from paying the membership fee if they are:
- registered as unemployed job seekers at the TE Office, and
- receive Labour Market Subsidy or Basic Unemployment Allowance from Kela.
Apply for exemption from the membership fee online through the 24h Membership Service or by calling the Member Service on 010 7703 430 (open Monday through Thursday from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.)
The notification period for membership fee exemption is three months and exemption is applied for retroactively. This means that if the period of unemployment begins on January 1 and continues until the end of March, you should apply for exemption from the membership fee for Jan–Mar in the beginning of April.
