Service benefits

JHL’s members are entitled to a wide range of services concerning the promotion of their interests and membership issues. If they need advice or help in problems at the workplace, the union is there for them. Service benefits are only available to union members.

In questions relating to working life and membership, help is available from persons in positions of trust at workplaces and branches, and from experts in the regional offices and the central office.

Promoting your interests

The most significant benefit for members is the collective agreement that JHL negotiates with the other parties concerned. The greater the number of members, the better conditions JHL can negotiate for them. JHL concludes collective agreements both in the public and private welfare sectors.

Public sector agreements include agreements for
• municipalities
• joint municipal authorities
• the state, and state and municipal offices
• companies and enterprises owned by the above
• parishes.

JHL negotiates agreements in the private welfare sector for the following fields:
• social services
• health care
• training and education
• counselling services
• transport
• urban maintenance
• the energy sector.

The closest people available for members in questions concerning the safeguarding of their interests are the shop stewards and chief shop stewards at their workplace. They monitor the implementation of collective agreements at workplaces, interpret the contents of the agreements, conduct negotiations with your employer and contribute to the development of the terms of employment.

JHL’s regional offices and union officials are available for help in all questions concerning collective agreements.

Support and help in case of problems

If problems arise at the workplace, the shop steward, nearest regional office and the central office personnel are there to support and help members. Non-members and members of an unemployment fund have to manage on their own.

The aim is to always solve disputes at the workplace in local negotiations. If this does not help and the employer’s actions are clearly contrary to law, legal proceedings can also be considered. A JHL member can receive free legal aid in proceedings arising from employment contracts.

In the event of a strike, members are entitled to the union’s industrial action benefit.

Member services

Membership issues are handled both by JHL branches, regional offices and the central office. People in charge of membership issues are available for help in matters relating to membership fees. They also help you in issues concerning exemption from the fee.
